Nucor's DiMicco wins leadership award

Friday, January 27, 2012

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Nucor Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Daniel R. DiMicco has been named the recipient of the Robert P. Stupp Award for Leadership Excellence by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).

"The award, presented on a selective basis by the AISC, gives special recognition to individuals who have provided unparalleled leadership in the steel construction industry," said Roger E. Ferch, P.E., AISC's president. "Dan is an exemplary leader in the steel construction industry and a strong advocate for domestic manufacturing jobs. He served as an instrumental ambassador of producer support on the AISC Board of Directors and has championed technological advancements in steelmaking and environmental leadership in the industry."

DiMicco will be honored at AISC's 2012 North American Steel Construction Conference at the Gaylord Texan Convention Center in Dallas in April.

"I'm tremendously honored to be so recognized by AISC," DiMicco said. "Manufacturing continues to be the backbone of the middle class in this country, and that backbone is strengthened with American steel. I'm particularly honored to be the second representative of Nucor to be recognized by AISC."

In 1999, Ken Iverson, Nucor's former CEO, was also honored by AISC with the Robert P. Stupp Award.

"I'm proud of the work that the men and women of Nucor do every day. We have over 20,000 teammates, and this award is a tribute to their commitment to our products and our customers. This recognition is every bit as much theirs as it is mine," DiMicco said.

DiMicco has served the steel industry for more than 35 years, starting in 1975 with Republic Steel Corporation in Cleveland where he began as a research metallurgist and project leader. He joined Nucor in 1982 as plant metallurgist and manager of Quality Control for the Plymouth, Utah, facility. In 1991, he became general manager of the Nucor-Yamato joint venture in Blytheville, and became vice president in 1992. Seven years later, he became executive vice president of Nucor, and in 2000 was elected president and chief executive officer. He was elected vice chairman of the Board of Directors in 2001 and chairman of the board in 2006.

DiMicco served on the AISC Board of Directors from 1999-2001. In 2008, he was appointed to the U.S. Manufacturing Council by then U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez and served on the board until 2011. Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors for Duke Energy Corporation, the American Iron and Steel Institute and the World Steel Association, where he has also been elected to the Executive Committee.

Late last year, DiMicco was also named to IndustryWeek magazine's Manufacturing Hall of Fame, where he was one of 10 inductees who "made names for themselves by challenging the established norms of their organizations, their industries and their world."

DiMicco graduated from Brown University in 1972 with a bachelor of science in engineering, metallurgy and materials science and received a master of science degree in metallurgy and materials science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975.
