County courthouses getting upgrades

Improvements are under way at both of Mississippi County's aging courthouses, and justices of the peace approved the first steps of having the Blytheville facility's roof repaired during Thursday's meeting of the Quorum Court's Energy and Property committee.

The committee recommended that the Finance Committee and full Court hire Mitchell's Specialties out of Paragould to do a patch job on the Blytheville courthouse's badly leaking roof. The roof is tile, and has been leaking through cracks, causing heavy water damage to certain parts of the building indoors over time. For an estimated price between $6,000 and $10,000, the tiles will be lifted and a polyurethane type sealant applied underneath them, which committee chair Fred Fleeman said is a cost-effective and short-term solution and should last four to five years. Included in that price will also be cleaning and repair work on the building's gutters, which are clogged and detaching from the building in places.

Also approved for motion to the Finance Committee and full Court was the move of the county's juvenile and veterans' affairs offices. Their current facility on 10th Street is, according to Judge Randy Carney, in terrible shape, with a heavily leaking roof, busted windows, and asbestos.

The proposed new facility will be located in the Dixie Heights shopping center, and will cost the county $600 per month in rent for a space which will accommodate five offices.

"We all realize that money is tight, but it's embarrassing for our county employees to be working in those kinds of conditions, and this is a very fair price for that facility," said Carney.

The committee also discussed other improvements that are under way at the courthouses -- new carpeting, reupholstered chairs and new water fountains at the Blytheville location, and repaired women's restrooms in Osceola. Carney commented that while much more work is needed on both facilities, the county is trying to do what they can with funds that become available from time to time.
