Armorel board takes stand on federal budget cuts

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

ARMOREL -- The Armorel school board voted unanimously on a resolution against the possible sequestration of federal dollars for education Monday night at the districts monthly school board meeting.

According to Budget Control Act passed by Congress in August of 2011, lawmakers were required to identify $1.2 trillion in cuts over the next 10 years. If specific cuts were not agreed upon by Nov. 23, 2011, then automatic cuts across the board would take place. Unless Congress acts before the end of the year, on Jan. 2, 2013, the Department of Education stands to lose between $3.5 and $4.1 billion.

The resolution passed by the Armorel School Board will be presented at School Association meeting in December.

"We wanted to let our voice be heard," said Superintendent Sally Bennett.

Bennett said since Armorel receives the state minimum in funding, every dollar is important.

Also Monday, Bennett said the district used all of the required funding from the National School Lunch Program in the previous year. Schools are required to spend at least 80 percent of the funds and cannot carry over more than 15 percent from the previous year.
