ARMOREL -- The Armorel Tigers took three out of the four games played against the Maynard Tigers Friday night in 1A-3 conference action at Armorel Gym, with the junior high and senior high boys posting wins, as well as the senior high girls.

The Armorel senior boys picked up their first conference win of the season with a 72-58 win over Maynard. The Tigers led from start to finish Friday night and connected on eight three-point attempts, five in the first half, as they built a double-digit lead going into the fourth period. Armorel connected on 11 of 16 free-throw attempts in the fourth to hold off any chance of a comeback from Maynard.

"We had great balance tonight," said first-year Tiger head coach Justin Ward. "Tonight was what we've been looking for as a team. We hit some threes tonight, but they were within the offense and what they (Maynard) were giving us. I didn't feel that we settled for shots."

The Tigers found their stroke early, as Payton Brown beat the first period buzzer with a three-point shot to give Armorel a 13-10 lead after one.

Ashton Kennedy opened the second with a bomb from beyond the arc as the Tigers opened up a six-point advantage. Seth Eatmon continued the hot shooting with three of his own from three-point land in the second period alone, as Armorel took a 33-25 advantage into the break.

The Tigers opened the third period on an 8-2 run and extended their lead to 41-27 halfway through the period. Payton Lannon ended the period as the Tigers had the previous two -- with a three-pointer, and Armorel led 50-39 heading into the final frame.

Maynard went to a full-court press in the fourth and cut the lead to eight at 51-43 before Dallas Nicholson got into the action for Armorel. His three-pointer with 6:45 to play in the period put the Tigers back up by double-digits, as did his free throws with 5:50 to play. Nicholson's bucket with 4:15 to play gave Armorel a 13-point lead at 60-47 and helped him post a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds on the night.

The Tigers finished off Maynard at the free-throw line. Brown and Lane Finely both hit a pair of free throws near the three-minute mark to give Armorel a 64-52 lead. Sam Warren and Lannon put the nails in the coffin with back-to-back baskets with two minutes to play.

"This was just a good team effort," said Ward. "It was fun to be a part of this tonight. Everybody stepped up every time Maynard made a run at us."

For the game, Brown led the Tigers with 16 points and eight rebounds, Nicholson added his 13 and 10, Eatmon and Lannon each scored nine points, Warren scored seven and grabbed nine boards and Gray chipped in six and dished out five assists.

Hunter Murdoch led all scorers with 21 points for Maynard in the loss, and Justin Davis added 20.

The Tigers improve to 1-1 in conference play and 3-9 overall. They head to Missouri next week for the Senath-Hornersville tournament. They play host Senath-Hornersville at 5:15 Monday night.
